Quarter-Finals

Richmond (#9) vs. Nar Shaddaa (#1) via NetPlay

Game 1 - Yu Darvish vs. Jacob DeGrom.  This one was billed as quite the pitching match-up, but in the end the long-ball was king.  Adam Eaton took DeGrom deep twice and collected five rbi setting up quite the finish.  The Mandolorians bring the tying run to the plate in both the 8th and 9th innings, but Richmond's bull-pen holds the line and Richmond escapes with a one run 6-5 opening game win.  Darvish strikes out 10 picking up the win; Seranthony Dominguez picks up the save.  Ronald Acuna, Matt Olson and Matt Chapman all went deep for Nar Shaddaa.

Game 2 - Jose Berrios vs. Justin Verlander.  Once again, what was built up as a pitching match-up, eventually turns to the bats again. Richmond, coming off the game one upset, was feeling good in this game as they take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning with their balanced offensive attack.  After Richmond made four defensive changes, the Mandolorians decide to get serious.  Tim Hill (who is on the roster to face one per and one person only; Matt Olson) starts the inning with a walk off his card (interesting, I went back and forth between Hill and Oliver Perez as the 27th player on the roster and settled on Hill to face Olson; if it were Perez it would have been a strikeout).  Still with a two run lead, Hill is pulled by manager Kevin Martin and puts in this season's closer Marcus Walden who promptly gives up a double (off his card) to Matt Chapman for the tying runners on second and third and no out.  After a strikeout, Starling Marte singles to close the gap to 5-4 with an out when Harrison Bader slashes a double (same freaking 4-9 off the pitchers card that Chapman hit) which gives Nar Shaddaa a 6-5 lead that they ultimately hold to even the series.  Richmond gets a runner on first in the top of the 9th, but Josh Hader's strikeout ends the game.  Matt Muncy and Harrison Bader homer for the Mandolorians.

Game 3 - Tyler Skaggs vs. Kenta Maeda.  Trevor Gott is brought in to start the 9th with Richmond holding an 8-5 lead  (it was 7-1 after five innings); Giocarlo Stanton greets him with a lead-off pinch single. Jose Altuve then singles putting runners on first and second when Richmond get a big break when Matt Weiters grounds into a double play.  Richmond replaces Gott with Seranthony Dominguez with two out and the lead is still 8-5 as Marcus Semien and Ronald Acuna draw back-to-back walks to load the bases (Acuna's walk was off Dominguez' card, which would have been a ground ball 2b-x; Frazier (2b 2e8) if Gott had remained int the game; Frazier had just entered the game as a defensive replacement).

(Would have loved to had the pitching change move to do over again).

Matt Olson to the plate and Richmond fails to use Tim Hill (remember he's on the roster just to face Olson in key situations such as bases loaded in the 9th inning).  Marcus Walden is brought in to face Olson instead of Hill and promptly serves up a meatball that still has not landed as Nar Shaddaa takes the 9-8 lead in which Kenley Jansen throws a perfect bottom of the frame as the Mandolorian comeback is complete.

For those following along at home; if Hill were brought in to face Olson it would have resulted in a double (at least two runs would have scored, who knows the result of the third runner if the game would have been tied, or not.  This one will haunt me!!! Adam Eaton and Yan Gomes homered for Richmond.

Game 4 - Jacob DeGrom vs. Charlie Morton.  Despite Morton's wildness, he actually was on point as he throws seven scoreless innings.  Harold Castro gets the best of a Degrom fastball and plants a home-run 1-3 (rolls a 3) with a runner on base to give Richmond a 2-0 lead in the second inning that holds up to end the game.  The Mandolorians did load the bases in the 8th inning, but Trevor Gott got himself out of a jam.

Seranthony Dominguez and Daniel Ponce de Leon close the game out for a perfect ninth and the series is tied two games a piece.

Game 5 - Justin Verlander vs. Yu Darvish.  The Manolorians cruise (first game like this in the series) to a 5-1 win behind Verlander and four home-runs (Marcus Semien, Matt Olson, Ronald Acuna and Ben Zobrist).

Richmond had a solo shot as Harold Castro hits the same HR 1-3.  The win gives Nar Shaddaa a three to two game lead and one win from the LCS.

Game 6 - Jose Berrios vs. Anibal Sanchez.  Just like game five, this game was anti-climatic as Richmond jumps taking an early 6-2 lead which was never threatened ultimately tying the series at three games with the 7-2 victory.

Game 7 - Charlie Morton vs. Jacob Degrom.  Richmond had defeated ace Degrom twice earlier in the series, but the Mandolorians decided the offense would take this game over as they score early and often racing out to a 6-0 lead after four.  Richmond never really threatened as Degrom was throwing darts (albeit a little wild with five walks).  Nar Shaddaa ultimately win the game and series 10-4 behind a balanced hitting attack.  Matt Olson started the attack with a two-run HR (his third of the series) in the first inning.

Congratulations to Jason Kip and his Mandolorians as they move to the next round continuing their fine season.  Thanks for the NetPlay as we only had a few minor technical glitches.  The game is calling Matt Olson as the series MVP; while Jason has not concurred, it's hard to argue after what he did in game three (4 HR and 11 RBI in the series).  I believe Richmond did put a scare in those from another world, but it was not meant to be.  Richmond would love to have a "do-over" for the 9th inning in game three, but as the manager you need to stay on point the entire time.  I believe my Richmond team greatly under-performed this season and are looking to make some changes.

Gussomo - Wildcard
 Richmond vs. Airway Heights

Series NetPlayed this morning; thanks to Ray for quick and easy accommodations.

Game 1:  Charlie Morton vs. Clayton Kershaw.  Richmond jumps on Kershaw early as they score two runs in the top of the first on four singles and ultimately open up a 6-0 lead.  Meanwhile, Morton was mowing the Spartans down throwing seven scoreless (7IP, 5H, 0R, 0BB and 9K).  Morton was also supported by Kevin Pillar's three run shot; and a Donovan Solano solo blast.  Airway Heights do avoid the shutout scoring a run in the 9th as Richmond takes the opener 6-1.

Game 2:  Jose Berrios vs. Chris Bassit.  Game Two was pretty much the exact opposite of the first game as Airway Heights jump all over Berrios (6IP, 8H, 6R, 2BB and 4K).  Bassit allows only one hit, an RBI single to Adam Eaton in the first inning and goes seven VERY strong (7IP, 1H, 1R, 6BB and 6K).  The Spartans had many offensive highlights including Justin Smoak's (three runs scored and three rbi in the game) two homeruns and Nelson Cruz crushes one over the fence.  Airway Heights ties the series at a game a piece as we head to Richmond.

Game 3:  Matt Boyd vs. Yu Darvish.  Darvish was rocking going seven strong (7IP, 3H, 1R, 0BB and 10K) and received support from Curt Casali with a two-run homerun in the fourth, as Nelson Cruz' solo shot was the only blemish against the Banshees in this game as they close it out strong with a 3-1 victory.  Eduardo Escobar added an insurance solo blast.  Marcus Walden gets two outs in the ninth before turning it over to Seranthony Dominguez to close the door for the final out to complete the perfect 9th.  Richmond up two games to one.

Game 4:  Brad Peacock vs. Charlie Morton.  This one was a classic pitcher's duel as both starters pitch seven strong, both giving up a single run and leaving the outcome to the bullpen.  Richmond strikes first with an Eduardo Escobar solo homerun in the 3rd inning.  Morton (7IP, 6H, 1R, 2BB and 7K) was almost as good as game one; while Peacock playoff debut was a success (7IP, 3H, 1R, 1BB and 5K).  Both teams score a single run in the 10th inning; Richmond's run came on a pinch hit solo homerun from Asdrubal Cabrera to lead off the bottom of the 10th.  Richmond loads the bases with one out and cannot push a run across and that will cost them. Richmond starts the eleventh inning with their closer on the mound and who promptly gives up a double, sacrifice and double (Ozzie Albies) to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead which Daniel Hudson, after blowing the save in the 10th, was able to secure the win by only allowing a two out single in the bottom of the frame.  Series tied two games a piece.

Game 5:  Clayton Kershaw vs. Jose Berrios.  This game was for the offense as the lead changed four times and we get free baseball similar to game four.  Kershaw (8IP, 6H, 5R, 1BB and 10K) and Berrios (7IP, 4H, 4R, 1BB and 8K) both got knocked around.  This game featured six homeruns between the two teams (Adam Eaton, Justin Turner and Eduardo Escobar (third straight game with a homerun), while Airway Heights countered with (Anthony Rendon, Nelson Cruz and the BIG blow was Joc Pederson's two-run shot in the 10th inning).  Daniel Hudson slams the door with a perfect frame on Richmond and the Spartans take a three games to two series lead back to the state of Washington.

Game 6:  Kenta Maeda vs. Chris Bassit.  Once again, Richmond scores early spotting Maeda with three runs in the top of the 1st and that's all the Banshees need as Maeda (9IP, 7H, 2R, 2BB and 10K) cruises to a complete game 8-2 victory to avoid elimination.  Eduardo Escobar homered for the fourth consecutive game and Justin Turner added a dinger in his second straight in support of Maeda and the Banshees.  Orlando Arcia hit a homerun for Airway Heights.  The series is ties at three games and it's winner take all as we move to Game Seven.

Game 7:  Charlie Morton vs. Clayton Kershaw.  Morton had been practically spotless in his first two starts of the series and he throws another GEM going seven strong (7IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB and 6K).  Richmond breaks the game open in the fourth inning when Lorenzo Cain jacks a three-run blast after an error and a single.  Justin Turner added a solo shot (his third straight game) as the Banshees ultimately build up a 6-0 lead.  Daniel Ponce de Leon and Austin Adams cap Morton's gem and throw a final scoreless two innings and the Banshees move into the LDS.

Thanks to Ray Ross for the opportunity for NetPlay as his strat day started at 6am PST.  I appreciate the discussion and strong internet connection as we only had a couple of re-starts.

Charlie Morton was named the series MVP going 2-0 with 21IP, 14H, 1R, 2BB and 22K (0.43 ERA in three games started).

This win sets up an intriguing match-up with reigning World Series Champion Stanford Robber Barons in which they beat the Richmond Banshees in last years World Series in seven games with an incredible rally in the 15th inning of the final game.  Richmond has a score to settle, but even more overwhelming odds against them.  We have nothing to lose Shoe, we're coming for you...

WILD CARD SERIES

Latrobe at Albany

Jeff,

Pleas use the attached CM. My original CM was funky and looked to have too many players, even though it didn’t show it that way when I built it. If you have any trouble with it let me know, and I will try again.

As for the games, Albany out split-carded and out x-charted Latrobe to win the first two games. Very close and fun as expected. Not sure either of these teams are destined to get too far without maximum luck. Defense and pitching are a bit of a crapshoot.

Files attached, but boxes also copied below for quick view.

Meanwhile, “The Shark” continued to outpitch his card. He’s yours for a draft pick next year! ??

Have fun playing the games. The teams are close enough and It looks like the games will be decided by the x-chart and split dice which is always fun (if it’s in your favor ??)

Ralph,

I initially thought I'd write a detailed report of the games I played in the Wild Card series. Then I thought... maybe not. I was ready to start writing the 'recap" yesterday, but it was pretty late and I was really tired, I got up this morning thinking, nah... I'm not going to do it. Then I changed my mind. I took copious notes of each game. I may not be able to read everything I wrote, but I'll give it a try.

GAME # 3 -- Stroman was pitching really good. You went down 1-2-3 in the 1st inning. We come up to bat and Rosario Singles to CF. We try for the steal and Sanchez rifles the ball down to... and past 2nd base and on into the Outfield for an Error. Rosario bounces up and motors on over to 3rd Base. Pineda circles around the mound, obviously annoyed. Freddie Freeman calls time and walks over to  the mound in an effort to calm down his Pitcher. Unfortunately, it didn't work. On the first pitch to Laureano, Pineda fires the ball over his head and all the way to the screen behind Home Plate. Rosario skips Home which really irked the boys from Albany.  Brantly hit a one-out Double, which would have scored the run anyway. At the end of the first inning, the Dawgs lead 1-0

Things settle down a bit, with Rengifo getting a walk in the 2nd, but no runs score as the score remains 1-0

In the 3rd inning, Moncada lets the ball go through his legs for an Error.  Yelich gets a hit to drive in the run on a 1-2 opportunity... with the split roll being a "1". Stroman was really pissed off. After a high and tight "message" pitch, a fastball Freeman, he threw the next pitch in the same spot and this one caught Freeman on the  arm. Stroman was still irked. He threw several pitches over to 1st base. On the 4th attempt, he picked Freddie off 1st base!

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Dawgs really got their game going. Rosario hit a Double to CF... but it almost turned into a Triple. Given the opportunity to go to 3rd, he took a big turn around 2nd, but just got back to the base. After a strikeout, Brantley stroked a Double to Right Field on a 5-3 RFX to allow Rosario to score. It looked as Gordon may have lost the ball in the lights. Moncada got a 2-8 Single with Brantley being held up at 3rd. On a 1-11, Josh Bell hit a Sacrifice Fly to Right Field to move the score to 3-1 in favor of Latrobe. Schwarber was up next and he lines a 2-Base hit (a 6-5 with a 7 roll) over the CF's head. Manager Fleischman, using a very aggressive base running approach, waves for Moncada to try to score. Yelich throws towards the plate, the ball was NOT "cut off" and the ball gets past Home Plate allowing Schwarber to score as well. This game is starting to look really good for Latrobe! Joakim Soria comes in to pitch and K's the next batter to calm things down.

In the 4th inning, Gary Sanchez hit a long ball to LF, a HR "1".... and Albany got a "1" on the split roll... but Michael Brantley climbed the fence and took the ball away from a fan... an incredible catch by Brantley for the Out!! In the bottom of the 4th, Allen gets a Single to LF. After a Fly Out to CF, Rosario Walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd, but the next two batters Strikeout and hit a Fly Ball to CF for an Out.

In the 5th inning, Gordon get a Single. Carpenter K's. Jose Peraza gets a 3-10 Double on a roll on another "1" making the score 5 to 2. Choo lines a 1-5 for a Single "1", but this time you got a 14. Yelich gets a 4-8 Single to RF to make the score 5 to 3. Freeman gets a 6-4 Double to CF. Gurriel is up next and he gets a 4-7 chance for a Double (1-9) but got a roll of 17 for the Out.

In the bottom of the Inning, Moncada got a 3-10 for a Single on a 5. Bell hits into a 4-6-3 Double Play with Cano making the play on a split chance. Schwarber hit a Double which could have made it a BIG INNING, but Rengifo flied out to CF.

In the 6th inning, Cano flies to CF, Sanchez flies to LF and Gordon hits one back to the Pitcher and is thrown out at 1st. In the bottom of the inning, with Suero pitching, Allen K's followed by another strikeout and a ground out to 2B.

7th inning. Carpenter Walks. Fleischman is thinking... hmmm... Stroman has been pretty good, but let's not let it go to our heads. We probably should conserve some innings. We've got a fresh, strong bullpen... we should be all right. You would think. But, alas, that was not the case. Carlos Martinez gets the call to face Pinch Hitter Leury Garcia. Noooo!! Martinez uncorks a Wild Pitch. Garcia looks over a couple of pitches and then strokes a Single on a 1-16 chance by getting a 14. Fleischman orders the Corners to be brought in. The batter is Shin Soo Choo. Martinez feels the pressure, but can't handle it as he unleashes ANOTHER Wild Pitch!!! Fleischman has seen more than enough and summons Matt Strahm from the Bullpen. Choo hits the ball to CF for a possible Single (1-7) and gets a '3". Yelich flies to CF but Freeman gets a 5-8 Double to CF. Yimi Garcia comes in to relieve and get Gurriel on strikes and Cano on a groundout... but it's now
6 to 5 in favor of the Internationals.

Things remain the same going into the bottom of the 7th. As you might guess, we can't make ANYTHING happen now. A groundout to the Pitcher, and TWO GROUND OUTS to Cano on "X" opportunities. How can that possibly be? He's a freakin' "4" out there!!

In the top of the 8th, Sanchez draws a walk, but can't advance on a 4-7 "K" and a a 3-9 "K" to Carpenter. Garcia ends the inning on a Force Out at 2B.

In the bottom of the inning, Bell strikes out. We get a ground ball to SS... another Fielding X Chart opportunity... and another "4" in the Field.... and another Out!! Geeezz... he's got a 4 at SS and 2B. I follow that up with a 6-6 roll for a Single "1", but can only roll a "9". Somehow, I don't have the same magic that Ralph has in getting those "1" rolls.

You got another run in the 9th... and I couldn't get squat. What would have happened  IF I kept Stroman in the game. Well, we'll never know... and you're now ONE GAME away from moving on to the next round of the Playoffs.

GAME # 4 - Nothing for you in the top of the 1st inning. Rosario gets a 6-2 roll (on Pitcher's card) which is a Home Run 1-18. We get a "10" for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd, you get a Single, Double, Single for one run and a Sac Fly by Gordon for a 2nd run. Albany leads 2 to 1. We're thinking that this game is going to be the last of the Series.

Nothing happens in the 3rd for either team. You don't score as well in the top of the 4th.

In the bottom of the 4th, the course of the Series starts to change. It all starts with a Single by Moncada, followed by a 1-base fielding error by Peraza... with Moncada moving over to 3rd Base. Schwarber is up next and he get a Single on a "1-3"... and WE got a 1... making the score 2 to 2.  A little bit of Albany aggression followed, as Rengifo and Allen both get "nailed" by pitches (HBP). Greg Allen is PISSED OFF and starts yelling and walking towards Lance Lynn. Gary Sanchez gets his big body in front of Allen, but Allen STILL wants a piece of Lynn. Home Plate Umpire, Lou Braille found his way between the two bodies and settled things down. He also issued a stern warning to Lynn. With things somewhat calmed down, Lynn was set to face the next Batter, Catcher Francisco Mejia. With the count 2 and 2, Mejia connected on a 3-4 roll... HR 1-18, Triple 19-20... BOOM!!! the roll was a "2"... GRAND SLAM!!!... and that was all for Lynn. In the 5th inning with 1 out, Brantley (again) lined a Single to Centerfield. Moncada grounded out, but Brantley moved up to 2nd Base. Polumbo ordered an Intentional Walk to Bell. That move didn't pan out too well, as Schwarber laced a 4-8 Single to drive in another run. Soria came in to relieve with men on 1st and 3rd and delivered a 3rd strike to Rengifo, Flaherty and the Dawgs were sitting pretty with a 6 to 1 lead! Flaherty was on his game,  not walking a single Batter up to this point.

The Internationals couldn't muster anything of the "Big Dawg" Pitcher the rest of the way. Latrobe tacked on one more run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Allen got a base hit and stole 2nd Base. With one out, Rosario reached 1st base on an Error by Matt Carpenter... and then he also stole 2nd Base. Baez came in to pitch and fanned Laureano, Guess who??? Brantley was next and got to 2nd Base on a Single and Error by the Shortstop... with the final two runs scoring.

The fans were screaming for Flaherty to finish out the game, but Manager Fleischman, wanting to save every inning that he could, decided to bring in Righty, Robert Stephenson to try to close out the game. He did just that, fanning all 3 International players that he faced. Final Score 9 to 2, Latrobe.

GAME # 5 -  Latrobe, trying to hang in there and do what no other team has done in Fleischman Playoff History... and that is coming back from a 3-0 deficit....(oh... wait...there is NO History!) Are you friggin' kidding me? 50 years? No way.... WAY!!

This one paired up Mike Soroka against "The Shark", Jeff Samardzija.... and as it turned out... the ENTIRE Albany International Pitching Staff!

Bottom of the 1st inning... and what do you know... Michael Brantley crushes a BOMB to LF.... a 1-18 HR (got a roll of "3).... Dawgs up by the score of 1-0.

Going into the Bottom of the 2nd, a Walk, a Single and another Single by Rosario (infielder couldn't make the play)... bases loaded. Schwarber is the next Batter and he rolls a Triple (1-11), but we get a "19" to plate a run. Rengifo attempts a bunt to move the runners up, but Sanchez can't make the play and is charged with an Error. Another Sacrifice Bunt try, but the throw to 3rd Base is not in time... causing the bases to be loaded. Next play is a Fly to LF... but it's a "C", so the runner does not score. The next play is a 1-6 Single to Right Field. Rosario turns on the burners with some patented "Fleischman Aggressive Running". The throw is not cut off and the Runner is safe at Home... runners advancing to 2nd and 3rd. With one out, Baez begins the "revolving door" and comes in to pitch. He gives up a Fly Ball to Centerfield... a SAC Fly making the score 4-0. Gonsolin relieves. Brantley can't make it happen this time, although he gets a Double 1-4, flyout to RF the rest. He rolls a "10" this time for the final out of the inning. Dawgs leading 4-0.

Top of the 3rd, Choo Singles, but a Strikeout and a 4-6-3 Double Play ends the inning. Bottom of the inning, Moncada Singles, Bell gets a Single "1", but the roll is a 3. Schwarber gets a solid "3-5" Double 1-14 (roll of 5). Once again with aggressive base running, Sanchez tries to block the plate... but his skills in that area are only Average... so Moncada scores with Schwarber going all the way to 3rd. Score is now 5-0. Who's next to come in? Oh... it's Soria and he gets Rengifo to flyout to CF... but the runner with aggressive base running "Tags Up" on a 1-13 chance and gets a 2 to score the run. The score is now 6-0 in favor of Latrobe. Suero comes in to pitch.

Top of the 4th.... Single by Gurriel, Cano Walks, but then there is a 3-8 strikeout, a 1-7 Flyball to LF and a 2-6 groundout to the 2nd Baseman. Things remain calm as we enter the 5th inning. Peraza get a hit on a 1-16 (9), a Flyball to CF, a 6-7 Single puts runners on 1st and 3rd. Albany get a run on a Flyball to CF (Sacrifice Fly), but the inning ends on a 1-12 lomax roll. Score now is Latrobe - 6  Albany - 1

The score remains 6-1 until the 6th inning, Britton gives up a Walk. David Price gets the call and serves up a 1-8 Walk to Brantley. Next batter is Moncada who lights it up with a 5-11 roll for a Homerun 1-18. The roll was a "6"  Three more runs score and the Dawgs are up
9 to 1.

Latrobe makes multiple position changes in the 7th inning. Good move as EVERYONE wants in on the action. McMahon, Ervin and Kelly continue the attack on International Pitchers, as 3 more runs score in the 7th inning. Latrobe is now KILLING IT by the score of 12 to 1....

Albany tries to get back into the game, scoring 2 runs in the 8th inning. Feliz sucks up the last two innings, giving up 1 run, but getting the final outs... including 3 strikeouts. Albany got some hitting is this game, 14 total... 11 off of Soroka, but none at the right time. The Dawgs were on FIRE... bashing 18 hits (3 Doubles, 1 Triple and 2 Home Runs). FINAL SCORE  12 to 4 in favor of Latrobe.

Internationals.. 0 0 0  0 1 0  0 2 1  -   4 14  1

Dawgs............. 1 3 2  0 0 3  3 0 x  - 12 18  0

Not sure if the Magic can or will continue.... but we've come back from a 3-0 deficit... to make it a Series to remember. We're down 3 games to 2 games. We've given it everything we can.... now all we can do is wait and see what happens in Albany.

Wild series.

Albany cruises to 3-0 game lead before Latrobe roars back for late inning comeback win in game 6.

Series tied 3 games to 3 with aces Lance Lynn and J Flaherty facing off in game 7.
