Stanford Robber Barons vs. Gilead Gunslingers
Stanford takes the Wild Card series 4-1 against Gilead.
All games were close and a different roll here or there and the outcome could have been totally different.
Thanks Shoe for net playing and a great series and working through some technical issues. And thanks Jeff W. for helping out with those issues.
Good Luck Shoe the rest of the way.

Today, Tuesday, October 28, Kevin and I NetPlayed our division series. Kona Coast took the series, 4-games-to-1.
It was a taut series for the first four games, all of which were one-run affairs, with games 3 and 4 going to extra innings. Kona Coast clinched via a surprising blowout in Game 5.
RICHMOND BANSHEES vs. KONA COAST COFFEE GROWERS
Game 1 – Kona Coast 2, Richmond 1. Starting the series in Hawaii, Chris Sale and Dylan Cease matched up in a classic pitchers’ duel. Sale limited the Banshees to just 3 hits but the visitors broke the scoreless tie in the top of the 7th inning on a 3-base error by left fielder Spencer Steer, immediately followed by a Shea Langeliers double (in what would turn out to be his only hit of the series). But fate would take its own course in the bottom of the 7th inning when with two outs, Francisco Lindor singled. That chased Cease, and David Robertson was called in from the bullpen. Royce Lewis came in as PH and got the called-out-loud roll of “1-9!” to smack a HR off his own card. In the 8th, the Banshees nearly tied it up. A lead-off double by Tyrone Taylor followed by a sacrifice bunt put the tying run at 3b with just one out. That ended Chris Sale’s day. Tyler Holton came in, induced a groundball that got Taylor at the plate. A popout later ended the inning. Holton worked around a two-out walk in the 9th inning to record the five out save.
Game 2 – Kona Coast 2, Richmond 1. The Coffee Growers struck for all their runs in the second inning, courtesy of a 2-run double by Jung Hoo Lee. Blake Snell allowed only 1 hit in 5-1/3 innings of work. He was charged with one run when, with runners on first and third, reliever Tyson Miller got the ground ball but Kona Coast could not complete the double play. As in the prior game, the Banshees threatened in the 8th inning, getting runners to 2nd and 3rd with two outs but couldn’t get the timely hit. Richmond only got two hits in the game (with five walks).
Game 3 – Kona Coast 2, Richmond 1 (14 innings). Yet another 2-1 game, but this time it took 14 innings in Richmond! The Coffee Growers got a 1st inning solo HR by Francisco Lindor but the Banshees tied it up 2 innings later on a single, sacrifice bunt, and a RBI single by Tyrone Taylor. Joe Ryan channeled his inner Nolan Ryan, allowing just two hits, no walks, and 12 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. The Banshees threatened with bases loaded and just one out in 7th inning but Tyson Miller saved the day for the visitors by striking out Jake Cave and Tyrone Taylor. Both bullpens pretty much stifled their opponents afterwards. Kona Coast finally broke through the 14th inning on two singles to start the inning, followed by a groundout hit-and-run to get runners in scoring position with just one out. Johan Rojas squeeze bunted home the eventual winning run. In the bottom of the 14th, Richmond did get a single but Tyler Holton came in to get the last two outs.
Game 4 – Richmond 6, Kona Coast 5 (12 innings). Guess what? Another one-run game, but this time the Banshees walked it off in the 12th inning with two outs. The Coffee Growers got off to a 2-0 lead but Riley Greene got one back for the Banshees on a solo HR in the 4th inning. Thairo Estrada hit a 2-run double for Richmond in the 5th inning to put the home squad up 3-2. But Kevin Pillar answered for the Coffee Growers with a tying RBI single at the top of the next inning. But wait! Josh Naylor’s solo shot in the bottom of the 6th made it 4-3. Andrew Volpe provided what looked like and insurmountable 2-run lead with a RBI single in the 7th. Lol. However, three consecutive Coffee Grower doubles in the 8th inning tied the game at 5 runs apiece, setting up another extra inning game. In the 10th inning, the Coffee Growers could not push a run over the plate as Spencer Steer grounded out into an inning-ending double play. In the bottom of the frame, a two-out error by the steady Andres Gimenez loaded the bases but Josh Naylor grounded out routinely to end the threat. In the bottom of the 12th inning, Andrew Volpe led off the inning with a single but was thrown out trying to steal on a botched hit-and-run. Tyrone Talyor grounded out. Then Nate Lowe walked, Riley Greene singled to put runners on the corners. Josh Naylor was given a free pass, and pinch hitter Austin Wells hit a clean single to win the game.
Game 5 – Kona Coast 11, Richmond 2. Surprisingly, the Coffee Growers beat up on Richmond’s #1 starter, Dylan Cease, early and often, scoring 7 runs in the first three innings via a 2-run Francisco Lindor HR, a 2-run double by Jung Hoo Lee, and a 3-run HR by Andres Gimenez(!). Chris Sale cruised through a complete game victory, allowing 8 hits, 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts.
Some series trivia:
Thanks to Kevin, my annual draft strategy doppelganger, for the fun conversations on the phone as we played our series. With four one-run games, it could have just as easily been a 4-1 Banshee series.
